How to Edit Natural Portrait Look

Oh you … yes you, my dear friends. Today is your lucky day. So many of you have wished this moment to come: I will teach one side of my superpower…  edition on photoshop. Many of you liked my recent picture and you’ve wondered how I did. This is how!

STEP 1: OPEN YOUR JPEG OR RAW IMAGE

STEP 2: DODGE AND BURNING

This means that you light up the brightness of the image and you “burn” up the dark areas. It will dramatically change , in a good way, the perspective of the image. You can use curves. Add a layer mask on them and use a brush!

STEP 3: GRADIANT

step 3 - gradiantFor a glowy effect, add up a gradiant fill with a radiant style at and angle of -132,88. Scale it up to 150. Be sure the box “Reverse” and “Align with layer” are checked.

Be sure to check to select hue on the type of processing.

STEP 14: LAST RETOUCH! Play with selective color to pop out colors of the image

On this image I applied two selective color : one to intensify pink and the other to intensify the blue. By adding a layer mask on each of them and by inverting the color to black, I took the brush tool and painted at the places I wanted on the image.

Music: Change Your Way Of Photographing

HOW DOES MUSIC CAN CHANGE YOUR WAY OF PHOTOGRAPHING LIFE

Since I was little, I’ve always been influenced in some way in music. My mom, a musician herself, inspired me to be one too. At the age of 6, I learned to explore all kind of instruments: flute, xylophone, drums, ect. A year after, I remember I went to Lauzon music store and my mom told me : ” Pick out your instrument”. I couldn’t resist and it was the moment I was born as a pianist. Since that moment, I never stopped playing piano and I must say I’m very proud of it. I’ve learned all the theory of music and I’m at my last year of piano studies before going to university (could be a possibility). I am also part of the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Gatineau in which I am a flutist. Great moments.

Anyway, this blog post isn’t supposed to share too much about my life, but since music is a big part of me… I would like to inspire you as well. This is why I want to share with you 5 ways music can change your way of photographing life:

1. Music is about listening what’s inside you, your desires and hopes

If music wasn’t about listening our heart and feelings, we would never feel it. It happens the same when you photograph anything in life. If you feel the moment, your photograph will too. So I suggest you just to let go with the flow and everything else will come out naturally. 🙂

2. If you make a mistake, don’t worry about it and continue : never stop

It’s so commun to hear when you do something wrong, you’re dying to try it again until you have it right. The problem is that, it will never be perfect enough and you will miss other things that comes up if you start to worry too much. My piano teacher always reminds me this:

Even professional and best pianist of the world makes mistakes.

Stop to worry on the bad and start to focus on what comes next!!!

3. Periods are my source of inspiration

Whether the music comes from Classical or Baroque period, it is the perfect way to know more on how humans were living before. In what conditions were they? What is the story and culture behind it? I have to admit it… I’m a big fan of romantic era. Romantic era is all about being expressive and inventive. It is also all about expensive symphonies, dramatic operas and passionate song took inspiration from art and literature.

Being said, when the word romantic or romantiscism comes ahead, I think about those gorgeous gown and royalty families. Back at the time, playing music was an honor to many countries. Only rich humans beings could afford to assist to a performance.  These periods is all about the beauty of life. This kind of thinking is crucial for a creative mind.

4. Practice for hours, hours, hours and hours

If you can teach your craft, it’s because you’ve mastered it! This key does not only apply to music or photography, but in anything in life. More you spent time on it, more you’ll become expert at it. Therefore, your work will become stronger and greater. Never stop to practice, it’s the solution for memory! Start little by little and you’ll notice soon enough the difference.

5. Having a full repertory to present is a better knowledge of your craft

Each end of May, I have piano exams to pass with a full music repertory. Four pieces of four periods (Baroque, Romantic, Classical and Contempory) and a piece of study! It’s the perfect way to show that I know, at least, enough of each subclass of the craft. Meaning that if I shoot normaly portraits, knowing a little bit of landscape (as an exemple) can possibly help me on my portraiture. Because at the end, we understand that each subclass has a different technical aspect to approach and it can be implemented to another subclass.

Self-portraiture : gold in photography

When I started photography, I instantly started to take photos of myself. I would make some basic editing and I would upload them right after on facebook.  I received a lot of positive comments on my images and it became the reason why I became serious about this passion. I know, some people may say they don’t like to be in front of the cameras… but as a portrait/fashion/fine art photographer, I agree to say that self portraiture makes you develop a new kind of understanding. I will share five benefits with you!

1) You are your own boss

With self-portraiture, you are the only one who can decide what to do with your environment. You have no pressure on and you have all the time you need to take the shot you want. Believe it or not, you are exploring your freedom with lighting, posing, post-processing and so much more!

2) You develop your style

No matter in what field you are in photography, self-portraiture gives you the ability to stay creative and original – in which will play an important role in your work. If you are not used to be in front of a lens, it gives you the opportunity to open your mind to new creativity! Give it a try! Everyone has his own sense to see the world, so the more you stretch your creativity, the more you grow as a photographer.

3) Better understanding on the technical aspects

If you specialize in portraiture, as I do, experimenting with self-portraits will help you have new ideas that you may want to apply when it will come the moment to photograph someone. Practicing self-portraiture on a regular basis will help you understand what type of posing, lighting and composition will work on a given situation. That way, the next time you will photograph a person, you will spend more time in interacting with them, rather than be mixed up to set up the technical aspects of your shoot.

4) Self-expression

Each time you take self-portraits, it offers you a regular dose of self-expression and exploration.  Even if you do not take selfies regularly, with a creative medium such as photography, you learn to share of your own perspective of the world. It is nearly impossible to explore self-portraiture without growth on a personal level, and personal growth, as photographers, almost always equals new creative horizons.

5) Invest time on Projects

Finally, if you truly want to develop your photography through self-portraiture, if you engage yourself doing the 365 days project or the 52 weeks project : at the end, it will be sincerely rewarding. Because behind these projects, it encourages you to think outside of the box and it’s a way for you to take an initiative with your camera to become a greater photographer. The key is practice : you have it all!

be a children everyday

No matter where life takes me, find me with a smile. Pursuit to be happy only laughing like a child. I never thought life would be this sweet. It got me cheesing from cheek to cheek.

Between romantic TV shows and  watching my little brother playing with his car around me, I understood something we tend so much to forget. I found something that was common between these two activities: the way to laugh and enjoy life. In my yesterday post, where you can clic here if you haven’t read it yet, I briefly explained how little things do matter and do change us in a positive way. Be childish on your everyday life by the way you act, you breath,  you eat and you anything!

Here are 10 tips to embrace your inner child;

  1. Retry the things you loved doing as a kid. Such things include going to the playground, the toy aisle or a cartoon movie session.
  2. Stop obsessing over the small things. Kids are carefree! Let go of worries and see if the world around you tumbles. You’ll be surprised that it doesn’t. And maybe you’ll regain some clarity and perspective.
  3. Kids are able to feel something intensely and then move on quickly from it. Try it. Feel what you feel without judging the feeling (“I shouldn’t feel this way”) so that you can move on from that feeling without holding onto it. It works!
  4. If you have kids (or have little sisters or brothers like I do!), do the stuff they like to do. Swing with them or trick-or-treat with them. Look at the world through their eyes. Build castles and mud highways with them. Get dirty, blow bubbles, toss balls over the neighbor’s fence and fetch them back sheepishly. Jump rope and eat snack-sized puddings.
  5. Stop obsessing over calories. Have a lollipop. Have a chocolate fudge coated something that looks so fattening it just screams “eat me”. Run around madly afterwards as a kid would do and you’ll soon burn off those calories!
  6. Never say the phrase “I’m too old”. Try “I’m in my middle youth” instead.
  7. Turn everyday chores into something fun;
    • Cleaning your room? Dance to some music.
    • Doing the laundry? Lie in the basket of warm laundry; well, your head at least!!
    • Decorating? Paint rude words on the wall before you hang the wallpaper over it.
    • Doing the garden? Get yourself dirty. This is what you can do to bring out the inner kid in yourself.
    • Cooking for supper? Gather some creativity, imagination, and inspiration. Mix weird tastes for a different culinary delight.
  8. Be easy-going! When you talk to someone about a subject, don’t be scared to talk about something completely different! You will feel less worried and you will feel joy throught your feet!
  9. Meet new people each day! You don’t need to feel pressure on because you do it for fun. When you go buy your meal, don’t be scared to talk to the workers behind the counter! Enjoy talking with them and talk about anything. Talk to someone you would never thought of! Create a bigger social network!
  10. Come back to Earth gently. Sure, you will eventually have to return to responsible adulthood. But learn from the fun that childhood teaches. Learn to always cast back your memory to fun childhood times and the things that made you feel safe, fulfilled and happy. Build on those memories in a way that allows you to be the responsible adult influenced for the better by the carefree child inside.

Being a child means being fun, being spontaneous and being creative. You don’t stop having fun when you get old, you get old when you stop having fun. Just remember, you can embrace your inner as long as you want. Don’t let the adult world make you grow out of loving the happiness and freedom of a child. What do YOU do to find your inner child? Share your favorite childish and enjoyable moments!
